3 Common Vaginal Surgeries

It’s no secret that cosmetic procedures have skyrocketed in popularity over the last few years, but many people aren’t aware that vaginal surgeries are among those procedures growing in popularity. In 2016 alone, there were 12,000 labiaplasties performed, a 39 percent increase from the previous year.

Here are three of the most common vaginal surgeries and what they do to improve the appearance and function of the vagina:

Vaginoplasty

Sometimes called a vaginal rejuvenation, a vaginoplasty is a procedure that contours the lining of of the vagina while tightening the muscles and soft tissue. It improves the appearance and strengthens the muscles of the vagina. Even though it sounds like a very invasive procedure, it usually only takes one to two hours and is an outpatient surgery.

Some problems a vaginoplasty can help with include:

  • A loose or large vaginal opening
  • Lack of friction during intercourse
  • Difficulty achieving orgasm
  • Vaginal noises during physical activity or intercourse
  • Trouble using tampons
  • Urinary incontinence

Labiaplasty

Every woman’s vagina is different. Some women are born with naturally larger labia, or vaginal lips, while other women’s may have become stretched due to childbirth or age. This can cause pain and irritation during sexual intercourse or physical activity. Even something as simple as wearing a swimsuit can be uncomfortable. Many women also find themselves embarrassed by the physical appearance of distended labia. A labiaplasty is a simple procedure that helps improve the appearance of the labia.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Also referred to as a clitoroplexy, a clitoral hood reduction improves the appearance of a wider or longer than average clitoris. As with the other conditions mentioned, this condition can cause embarrassment and physical discomfort. Things like sexual intercourse and wearing tight clothing can be uncomfortable or downright painful.
