Star Talks Candidly About Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery? Yes, please, says actress Patricia Heaton.

Heaton, the star of popular sitcoms “The Middle” and “Everybody Loves Raymond,” recently talked to People magazine about her experience with cosmetic surgery, why she picked the procedures she did and how they have benefited her.

In her interview, Heaton, 60, talked about having four pregnancies that resulted in four C-sections, which left her body out of shape and a different size. According to Heaton, her body “wasn’t pretty” after the toll of pregnancy and surgery.

She’s not alone.

“After pregnancy or pregnancies, many women experience the separation of their stomach muscles, known as diastasis recti, as well as weight gain and a mom ‘pooch’,” said Dr. Christy Walker.

Walker is a dual-board-certified cosmetic surgeon and gynecologist practicing in Plano, Texas.

“These situations are difficult or impossible to correct on one’s own through diet and exercise. To successfully treat these conditions may require help,” Walker said.

Help for Heaton meant stomach reconstruction surgery to tighten and reshape her midsection.

“Many women choose to have the abdominoplasty tummy tuck procedure after having children to give them both their shape and their confidence back,” Walker said.

Which is what happened to Heaton. She told People that after having her stomach procedure, she had more confidence and felt better about herself.

Heaton also revealed that she liked minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers and Botox, the popular endotoxin used to reduce wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the facial muscles.

Although Heaton is a fan of cosmetic procedures, she warns people not to go crazy at the risk of looking overdone – something important to remember in Hollywood as the camera could pick up too much work.

Heaton is one of many Hollywood stars who openly talk about their cosmetic procedures. Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Kaley Cuoco and model Chrissy Teigen have all talked about what work they have had done and the benefits of their procedures.

While these starlets aren’t shy about their surgeries, some actresses do not necessarily want to be asked about the topic. Late last year, Hollywood icon Jane Fonda was asked by “Today Show” host Megyn Kelly about her cosmetic surgery.

Fonda, who was on the show to talk about her film “Our Souls at Night,” refused to address the question.

Whether people are talking about cosmetic procedures or not, they are definitely having them done at ever-increasing rates.

“The demand for cosmetic procedures is on the rise – from surgery to injectables,” Walker said.

Statistics also show that cosmetic procedures are in demand. In 2017, there were 17.5 million cosmetic treatments performed in the United States.

Of this number, 16 million procedures were noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments such as fillers, Botox, laser hair removal and radiofrequency skin-tightening treatments. This number reflects a 2 percent increase in demand for these treatments between 2016 and 2017.

“Radiofrequency skin tightening is gaining in popularity because it allows people to see great results without serious surgery associated with the face-lift procedure or other body-lifting surgeries,” said Walker.

In addition to avoiding surgery, minimally invasive procedures mean less risk and a faster return to regular activity.

“Reduced recovery times are a plus for many people considering cosmetic procedures – in Hollywood or in regular life,” Walker said.

Surgical procedures were also in demand in 2017.

“Minimally invasive procedures can yield a lot of great results, but to correct some situations requires surgery,” Walker said.

The top procedures last year included breast surgeries, liposuction, rhinoplasty and the tummy tuck abdominoplasty procedure.
