According to a recent study, a new cosmetic surgery is taking the world by storm. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has revealed that labiaplasty is the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery in the world right now. The procedure reduces or changes the size and shape of the labia, which are the folds of skin, sometimes referred to as lips, around the vaginal opening.
In 2016, data showed a 39 percent increase in the number of labiaplasty surgeries performed. That year, over 12,000 procedures were performed, compared to just over 9,000 the year prior – and the numbers continue to grow. Some experts believe this is due to technology, social media and the instant access to information the internet has brought to our culture.
A woman may choose to have a labiaplasty for cosmetic or health reasons, and sometimes for both. The size and shape of a woman’s labia can cause discomfort from clothing, exercise or sex. Most exercise apparel for women is designed to fit tight and to sit high on the hips and groin. This can lead to chaffing and rubbing that can be painful and cause soreness that can last for days.
Some women are simply unhappy with the way their vaginas look and choose to have surgery to help with their self-esteem and confidence surrounding this most intimate area of their body. Many women report feeling more confident in themselves and their sexuality after undergoing the procedure.
